1. Check your eligibility for registration

The first thing to do is to check whether you are eligible for registration in New Zealand

To practice in New Zealand you are required to have registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. In order for us to consider an application from you, you will therefore need to be eligible for provisional or general registration.

Self-assessment

The best way to check whether you are eligible is to complete the self-assessment that the Medical Council of New Zealand has outlined here.

Your primary medical degree must also have been completed at a university recognised by the World Directory of Medical Schools.

Please note that we only recruit doctors who are eligible for provisional or general registration, not vocational registration.

Pathways

Typically our doctors fall into the following pathways for registration:

• New Zealand/Australian graduates
• Competent Authority pathway (UK/Irish graduates)
• Comparable Health System pathway

Please note that at this stage you should not download any of the related documentation. We will provide this to you should you be offered a position and we will guide you through the process.
